Adding and editing pending links

You normally define a page's pending links when you create the page. However, you can add pending links between pages, and you can change links between pages from one type to another. The link types you can define when you create a page are child to parent (Parent), parent to child (Child), previous sibling to next sibling (Next), and next sibling to previous sibling (Previous). For information on these link types, see Adding empty pages and pending links to a hierarchy. The type of newly added links is Hyperlink--a link outside the navigational hierarchy. You can change a pending link to any of these five types, and also to the type Tour. Tour links connect a series of pages, not necessarily adjacent siblings, in a sequence that could be realized as a page-by-page tour of some subject area.

Link types are editable. You can change the color of a type or add a new type with a new color and name.

To add a pending link of the type Hyperlink from one page to another:

1 Select the source page. A point-and-shoot button appears on the page.

2 Drag from the point-and-shoot button to the target page. A new line with the link type Hyperlink is created.

To add additional pending links between already linked pages:

1 Do one of the following:

  • Select two pages linked to each other.
  • Select two or more pages linked in sequence, starting with the first page in the sequence.

  • 2 Choose a link type from the Add Design Line submenu of the context menu. Ordinarily, you add a type that matches the current link type. For example, you add a Child link (parent-to-child) to a Parent link (child-to-parent).

To select any page or line after the first page or line selected, Control-click (Windows) or Shift-click (Mac OS). Control-clicking or Shift-clicking again deselects the page or line.

    To change a link:

    1 Display the Inspector.

2 Click a link line to select it. The line shows a small rectangle (), and the source and target pages are highlighted.

3 If necessary, select other lines. If multiple lines are selected, their source and target pages are not highlighted.

4 Choose a new link type in the Link Inspector. Normally you would choose only Hyperlink or Tour, because the family link types (Parent, Child, Next and Previous siblings) are more easily changed by dragging one of the linked pages onto the other one. For information, see Moving pages.

Important: If you create a new kind of family link between two pages by dragging one of them onto the other, the link will be valid. However, if you use the Add Design Line submenu or the Link Inspector to create it, you may create an invalid family hierarchy--for example, a child with two parents.

    To edit link types:

    1 Open a design view.

2 Choose Design > Edit Link Types.

3 Do one of the following:

  • To change the color of a link type, select the type, click the color field, and provide a new color.
  • To add a link type, click New, provide a color, and type a name.

  • 4 Click OK.
